Dental implants, explained

Years ago, if you needed to replace missing teeth, your options were dentures or bridges. While both solutions are still sound options and used today, they only replace the crown of the tooth (the portion that is visible above the gumline). Without replacing the missing tooth root, the jawbone will begin to deteriorate, which can cause remaining healthy teeth to shift out of place and can lead to premature aging in the face. Additionally, the changes in bone and soft tissue structure will require these devices to be adjusted and replaced about every ten years.

Dental implants start with a post that is surgically placed into the bone to replace the missing root. The screw-shaped device is made from a safe, biocompatible material. Once in place, the bone fuses around the implant, forming a stable foundation for the final replacement. The number of implants required depends on the number of teeth missing and the final dental prosthetic. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or used to anchor dentures to replace all teeth within an arch.

Benefits of dental implants

There are many advantages to choosing dental implants for tooth restoration. Here are the top four:

  • You’ll feel and look great – Unlike traditional dentures, which can make everyday tasks such as talking or eating feel uncomfortable, dental implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can practice regular oral hygiene and enjoy peace of mind.
  • They are long-lasting – Dental implants are designed to last for decades, unlike other alternatives that need to be replaced more often.
  • You’ll live with confidence – Dental implants are held securely in place, so you don’t have to worry about them slipping out of place when you talk, or eat.
  • They preserve oral health – With dental implants placed into the bone, you don’t have to worry about bone deterioration or other common oral health issues. It’s important to place dental implants as soon as possible after tooth loss to preserve bone.

What are dental implants? How can dental implants help replace a missing tooth? In this video Dr. Thelam Nguyen from Tansley Woods Dentistry near Burlington, ON explains all you need to know about Dental Implants and its benefits.

What are dental implants?

Hello, my name is Dr. Thelam Nguyen. I am the dentist at Tansley Woods Dentistry. Today we are going to talk about dental implants. Dental implants are one of the options that we are using to replace missing teeth.

What are the advantages of dental implants?

The advantage of dental implants is it can act and feel like natural teeth. During dental implants, you essentially leave your adjacent teeth alone. This is a very effective way to replace missing teeth.

Who is an ideal candidate for dental implants?

If patients are indicated for dental implants and if their medical health and bone volume are good, they can be considered as perfect candidates.

Are dental implants painful?

My answer is no. From my experience, there is a very minimal amount of pain when we perform dental implants.

Dental Implants FAQ

Does getting a dental implant hurt?

Getting a dental implant does not feel much different than many other dental procedures, such as getting a filling. While receiving a dental implant is a surgical procedure, using anesthesia ensures that you will not feel any pain during the process. There may be some slight discomfort following your treatment, but most patients who receive dental implants can handle this discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications. You should be able to return to work the day following your procedure, so there is no need to take any time off.

How long should a dental implant last?

To understand the answer to this question, you must know that there are multiple components which make up the complete implant. The implant post is surgically inserted into the jawbone, while the tooth prosthetic above the gum line looks and functions as the tooth replacement. The implant post should last you a lifetime, while the prosthetic should last you 15 or more years, depending on how well you care for it. Compare that to other tooth replacement options like a conventional bridge or dentures, which will likely need to be completely replaced every ten years or so.

Are there risks or complications associated with getting a dental implant?

Just as with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with getting a dental implant. Things you should consider before getting a dental implant include:

– What medications are you currently on (benzodiazepines, blood thinners, etc.)?
– Do you have any conditions which may prohibit normal healing, like diabetes?
– Are you a smoker?

During your consultation with Dr. Nguyen, it’s essential to disclose your medical history and current medications to evaluate potential risks. Also, your chance of implant failure is higher if you are a smoker or are diabetic, although not usually enough to have to avoid treatment.

Will I be given sedation during my dental implant procedure?

In many cases, sedation is unnecessary for your implant procedure. While this is a common misconception, the thought is that if you can withstand getting a dental crown, you can get an implant without being sedated. A local anesthetic, however, will be required so that you are completely numb during the procedure. While sedation is not required, if you are feeling anxious about the process and would like to discuss sedation as an option, please let Dr. Nguyen know.

Will dental insurance cover the cost of a dental implant?

Dental insurance policies have an annual maximum payout that may not cover the total cost of a dental implant. This will leave you responsible for a portion of the total bill. Please contact our office with any questions about the procedure’s cost. We are happy to work with your dental insurance company to determine how much they will cover so that you know your portion before the procedure. While dental implants may seem costly upfront, they are a cost-effective treatment in the long run because the implant should last you a lifetime.

Are dental implants safe?

Dental implants have been used for tooth replacement for over 50 years and have been proven safe and effective. Additionally, a dental implant stimulates natural bone growth and promotes better oral health, which traditional bridges and dentures cannot do.
