These Are the Things Your Dentist Can Recognize Just by Looking into Your Mouth

Dentist in Burlington Ontario Area

Finding a dentist you can trust in the Burlington, Ontario area, is vital to your oral health. When you have a dentist you see regularly, they will be able to identify oral health concerns and other potentially serious issues. Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body, and symptoms linked to other health conditions can begin in your mouth. At Tansley Woods Dentistry, Dr. Thelam Nguyen provides quality dental care to each patient he encounters. Here are some things a dentist can tell you just by looking in your mouth.

You Don’t Regularly Floss

Even if you floss right before seeing your dentist, you are not fooling anybody. The gums of patients who floss before a visit, but not on a regular basis, will often appear bleeding or damaged. Healthy gums will look nice, tight, and pink. When patients floss right before an appointment, a dentist will likely be able to see slices where the floss cut at the gum.

You May Have an Eating Disorder

Many patients are quite taken aback when their dentist asks them if they suffer from any eating disorders. Conditions such as bulimia, for example, exhibit a very particular pattern of wear on the teeth, which is easily identifiable. Erosion of the teeth occurs almost exclusively on the tongue side of your front teeth and can play a role in increased cavities. Other possibilities could include acid reflux or the use of antidepressants (or other mood-elevating drugs). Both of these contribute to decreased saliva production, which increases the risk of acid damage to teeth.

You Suffer from A Vitamin Deficiency

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can lead to many detrimental oral conditions, including increased infections, bone infections, gums that bleed easily, and more. Iron deficiencies, in particular, can present many symptoms, including severe sores in the mouth and a change in the tongue caused by small papillae falling off the tongue, leaving it smooth and glossy.
