What to Expect When it is Time to Get a Dental Implant

Qualified Dentist Replace Missing Tooth in Burlington Area

It is estimated that around 3 million Canadians are missing at least one tooth that has been replaced with a dental implant. This number is expected to keep growing by about half a million per year as more patients are turning to the benefits a dental implant offers over other missing teeth replacement options such as dentures and bridges. If you are looking for a dentist who offers teeth replacement options in Burlington, Ontario, you should reach out to the friendly team at Tansley Woods DentistryDr. Thelam Nguyen and his team would love to talk to you about getting a dental implant and help you determine if this is a process you would like to consider for your missing tooth or teeth.

Evaluation and Extraction

When you visit Dr. Nguyen, he will first want to complete an examination to determine the health of your mouth and jaw. This will determine if your oral health is in the proper condition to accept a dental implant or if you require additional planning or dental work before considering an implant.

If the teeth you are looking to replace with a dental implant are still in your mouth, these teeth will need to be removed via an extraction. The extraction of any necessary teeth can usually happen during the implant procedure, but there may be some situations where it will need to be performed first.

Receiving Your Dental Implant

Once your mouth is ready to receive a dental implant, a local anesthetic will need to be applied to numb the area where the implant will be placed. If you would like to consider stronger anesthesia so that you are not awake during the procedure, make sure you bring these concerns up with your dentist.

Once the area is anesthetized, the implant will be surgically inserted into the jawbone. Healing can take anywhere from 3 to 9 months. During this time, as you heal, your jawbone will also fuse to the implant via a process called osseointegration. Once you are healed and the implant is firmly fused to the bone, you will be ready to receive your abutment, attaching it to the implant. Onto this abutment, a dental crown will be placed.
