Dental veneers are placed on the front facings of teeth to camouflage numerous smile imperfections. If you have spent your life feeling self-conscious about your smile, porcelain veneers placed by Dr. Thelam Nguyen can breathe life into your flawed smile, freeing you from the embarrassment of showing your smile.

What dental veneers can do for your smile

Porcelain veneers are designed to look and feel like natural teeth but with the advantage of choosing how they look, from shape, colour, and size. This versatility makes dental veneers a popular cosmetic treatment to treat numerous dental flaws, including:

  • Chipped/sensitive or worn-down teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Uneven minor spaces between teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Uneven teeth

It’s possible to place veneers on all the teeth within the smile zone, but some patients only need one or two veneers for a dramatic transformation. Dr. Nguyen will assess your smile to establish the correct number of veneers to change your smile to what you consider beautiful.

What to expect from porcelain veneer treatment

The first step when getting porcelain veneers is to book an initial consultation with Dr. Nguyen. We’ll assess your smile, note your current concerns, and establish your smile goals to help create a personalized plan. We make this step engaging to design the smile you want. After all, it’s your smile; we are just designers!

Once aligned with the treatment, we prepare your teeth by shaving a small amount of the front enamel. Next, we’ll take impressions of your prepped teeth and send the images to our ceramist to fabricate your bespoke veneers. Until your veneers are ready, our doctor will place temporary restorations to protect your smile.

After two to three weeks, your veneers will be ready for placement. We’ll try your new veneers with temporary cement and make a few final touches before using strong dental adhesive to bond them permanently to your teeth.

Porcelain Veneers FAQ

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are incredibly thin shells crafted from porcelain that are shaped and shaded so that they can be applied to the front surface of a tooth and provide a completely natural look. They are bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve the appearance of a tooth that may be discoloured, misshapen, cracked, chipped, gapped, and more. Porcelain veneers are crafted in a dental lab and are resistant to staining and whitening, meaning you should have your teeth whitened before getting veneers if you plan on doing so.

What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth to conceal a wide range of cosmetic dental flaws. A dental crown, on the other hand, is crafted to encapsulate a tooth completely. Crowns can be used for cosmetic purposes but are mainly used to restore and protect teeth damaged or weakened by extreme decay, root canals, physical trauma, and more.

Will veneers protect my teeth from decay?

When a tooth is covered with a veneer, it does not become less susceptible to decay. It is essential to take care of a veneered tooth like any other tooth in your mouth that does not have a veneer. Only with proper oral hygiene will you be able to keep decay, gum disease, and other oral diseases at bay. You should not depend on a veneer to protect your tooth from cavities or decay.

Are there advantages to choosing porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers offer many advantages. First, they are incredibly versatile and can conceal a wide range of cosmetic imperfections, including tooth discolouration, gapped teeth, chips and cracks, misshapen teeth, and more. Additionally, there is very little preparation required to apply your veneer. A very thin layer of your enamel must be removed so the veneer can sit flush with your natural teeth and not look bulky. Veneers are also stain-resistant.

Are there any drawbacks to veneers?

It is not necessarily a drawback, but there is something you should know about veneers. Once you have veneers, the process is irreversible. Because a layer of enamel has to be removed from your tooth, that tooth will always require a veneer because enamel does not regenerate. If a veneer cracks, it may be challenging to repair without replacing it entirely. You should also not get veneers if you cannot break certain bad habits like pen chewing or nail-biting, as these can lead to cracks and breaks in the veneer.

How long will my veneer(s) last?

A veneer that is well crafted and accurately placed on a tooth by an experienced dentist like Dr. Nguyen should last you anywhere from 10-15 years before needing to be replaced. A veneer does not require special care. Ensure you brush and floss and avoid bad habits like chewing on hard objects. With proper care, your veneer will last you the appropriate time.
